2) a good reason french subtitles fail to fully convey what's being said is they've been abbreviated. comparing the french subtitles for ghostbusters with the french dubbed audio track shows just how significant the difference is. much of the spoken french is delivered rapidfire in order to keep up with pace of the english, making it impossible for my untrained ear to even decipher what's being said.

hmm. i would have thought english to be slower than french, but i guess that's just because i'm from texas and we...drawl.

and this might be totally unrelated...or it might be somewhat related, but i don't know how to translate it into relateable-ish terms: i like to watch foreign films in the original language (usually german or japanese) with english subtitles. i don't actually read the subtitles word for word, merely use them as a guide. instead, i let the actor's delivery tell the story, which, i guess, depends on the actors being good actors. but it always ends up being a lot different than if i listen to the dubbed version. and the english subtitles usually vary quite a bit from the english audio, which, i suppose, is why this is related since that's probably the point you were making with the french.

a lot of the pacing is due to the original actors delivering really long sentences rapidfire & i think part of it is due to the differences in length of words; for example, an english speaker might deliver the one syllable "please" which the french speaker would say with three syllables "s’il vous plaît". i'm not studied enough to know why they can't just say "plaît" instead of "if you please".

i know what you're saying about english subtitles & dubbing & i think there are advantages for both ways. i agree that subtitles are generally better, especially if the subtitles are really well done.
