so a little while back i was thinking about what c. and i might choose as the theme of our christmas mix cd. last year's was double talk, with talk as the theme, which started from my delight with of monsters and men's little talks. there wasn't really a new song that stood out in my mind this year except when i heard of monsters and men's mountain song on the radio, which i like passing well, and the word that grabbed me was horses because i immediately knew i'd be able to use florence + the machine's dog days. but i wavered after discussing with c. and realizing how tough it might be to find enough songs with 'horse'.

a week ago friday, i happened to be able to leave work in the very early afternoon, and as luck would have it just as i was milling this topic in my head on the drive home, mountain song came on the radio, and while it was playing i overtook two horse trailers on the highway. and they weren't the kind that are enclosed except for slats on the side, they were the ones where you can see the horse's ass and tail flowing out the back. there were two horses in each trailer.

and then, this past monday, i heard dog days on the radio for the first time in a long while.

but then, this past friday, when i again chanced to be driving in to work a little later than i'd planned to, another song came on the radio that i already knew i'd use if we stuck with horses: u2's who's gonna ride your wild horses?. a song which, although it was the fifth single from that 1991 album, i don't recall ever hearing played on the radio before.

so horses it seems meant to be.
but we've considered making it "wild horses", so that c. can use 'wild'; she's having a hard time thinking of many horse songs she'd like to use.

How about a Band of Horses song?

i never liked seattle bands, but then there was modest mouse, so maybe the ones with animals in their names are the exception. not familiar with them although it's possible i've seen them on a late night show.

i don't know if the refreshments song you gave me a couple of years ago fits in with the musical style, but it always makes me happy when it comes up on shuffle. i can think of several horse songs, and not just country.

yeah, that was definitely one of the songs on my list. i'd be curious to know what yours are -- we're close to giving up on it.

well, maybe not so many besides the obvious ones, and i don't how well any of these would go in a mix:

the obvious ones:

the rolling stones - "wild horses" - (which you've already mentioned, but there's only a zillion covers to choose from. i still kinda prefer the sundays version.)

america - "a horse with no name"

counting crows - "another horsedreamer's blues"

tori amos - "horses"

kt tunstall - "black horse & the cherry tree" (although i doubt i would pick it)

the main one that came to mind was:

live - "horse" (she rode a horse into my head) i was thinking it was a hidden track on the throwing copper album.

third eye blind - "anything" (okay, it only has the word "horse" in it a couple of times)

lisa loeb - "no fairytale" (i thought it had horses in it, but it's only once.)

switchfoot - "dark horses"

then the more poppy stuff:

scissor sisters - "only the horses"

goldfrapp - "ride a white horse" (which i don't really care for, but it's on my ipod)

ellie goulding - "guns and horses"

belinda carlisle - "runaway horses"

gino vannelli - "wild horses" (i'm assuming i collected this and the previous song for some 80s billboard chart playlist.)

q lazzurus - "goodbye horses" (again, i'd probably pick a cover because the original freaks me out)

and i said no country, but i gotta give "silver stallion" by the highwaymen an honorable mention.

wow, thanks.

the ones you mentioned which i had were 'horse with no name' and the scissor sisters one (remix by calvin harris) and 'goodbye horses' (i second that -- for me the original is too well associated with its use in the movie). i was going to go with the dmb cover featuring mick for 'wh' -- not familiar with the sundays yet.

crows: i know the song but was going to go with 'four white stallions' even though it doesn't have the word horse.

tori: again i know the song but was going to with 'humpty dumpty' and/or 'winter'.

kt tunstall: c. had this song on her list -- i hadn't heard it.

3eb: i like the band but don't know this song yet.

live: the band is decent but i don't know this song yet.

lisa loeb: i know her one hit, not that one (yet).

switchfoot: i don't know for sure but i don't think i like them.

goldfrapp: i listened to it for the first time when searching for horse songs -- didn't dig it & don't think it fits the tone.

belinda: again, first time i heard it was while searching -- thought it was too sappy and overproduced.

ellie goulding: not sure whether i like her -- her huge radio hit annoys me to no end, but her collaboration with calvin harris is okay.

gino: never heard of him or this song; hadn't run into it in my horse search yet either.

when it comes down to it, there's enough songs that i like to pull eleven together, but c. only has a handful: 'lucky man' by elo, 'little red corvette' by prince, 'white room' by cream. some other candidates but nothing she's excited about.

oh, i forgot about the dave matthews version of "wild horses"! well, i don't know if it's the same performance you mentioned, but it had an awesome acoustic/electric guitar solo with a lot of delay. i don't seem to have it any more.

i think the sundays version was the first version of the song i knew of as it was featured on the buffy the vampire slayer (tv) soundtrack.

good luck with whatever theme you guys decide to go with. :)
