philosophical persons, to make modern and familiar,
things supernatural and causeless. hence is it that
we make trifles of terrors, ensconcing ourselves
into seeming knowledge, when we should submit
ourselves to an unknown fear.
i'm so delighted by all the serendipity and also just the very cool things(tm) that are out there, in the world, waiting to be experienced. and yet the serendipity is not the bane of disappointment and other bad stuff(tm).
chouette means owl.
chouette is also a moth.
another moth in the same genus is attributed to a different a. de villiers.
la chouette (en latin noctua) était une constellation située entre les constellations de l'hydre et de la balance. elle remplaça la constellation plus ancienne grive solitaire. son origine est inconnue. elle est devenue obsolète.
the english wikipedia uses noctua (latin for little owl): a seldom mentioned constellation that was once placed between the end of the tail of hydra, the sea-serpent and libra. the origins of the constellation are unknown, but an image of it appears in the american astronomer elijah burritt's atlas, part of his geography of the heavens. noctua seemed to replace the earlier constellations of turdus solitarius, the solitary thrush and john flamsteed's hermit bird. all of these constellations are no longer recognized by astronomers.
heh. turdus solitarius. heh.
no longer recognized. that is how it goes, innit?
despite the synonymity of the words, noctua is a different moth than chouette. its own genus of moths even. these moths have dull, cryptic forewings, but often bright hindwings.
noctuoidea is the superfamily of noctuid (latin "night owl") or "owlet" moths, and has the largest number of species described for any lepidopteran superfamily. its classification has not yet reached a satisfactory or stable state. typical.
just as there are owl moths, there is a moth owl.
then to bring the stars back, there is also this.
the belief in this logos or daemon speaking to the reason of man, was one which neither
plutarch nor marcus, neither numenius nor ammonius, as far as we can see, learnt from
the christians; it was the common ground which they held with them; the common
battlefield which they disputed with them.
again the white line stretched slowly out. gale fell in behind. a bench of ground,
covered with sparse greasewood, sloped gently down to the deep, wide arroyo of forlorn
river. blanco sol shied a few feet out of the trail. peering low with keen eyes, gale
made out three objects--a white sombrero, a blanket, and a mexican lying face down. the
yaqui had stolen upon this sentinel like a silent wind of death. just then a desert
coyote wailed, and the wild cry fitted the darkness and the yaqui's deed.
'i do not think,' said mr. nicholson, at last, 'that i am an ungenerous father. i have
never grudged you money within reason, for any avowable purpose; you had just to come to
me and speak. and now i find that you have forgotten all decency and all natural
feeling, and actually pawned - pawned - your mother's watch. you must have had some
temptation; i will do you the justice to suppose it was a strong one. what did you want
with this money?'
'i would rather not tell you, sir,' said john. 'it will only make you angry.'
all morning the town was strangely deserted, the very children gone.
it's delightful to think i have something to give her.
now, don't be looking i told-you-so, matthew. that's bad enough in a woman, but it isn't to be endured in a man.
at that instant he saw, in one blaze of light, an image of unutterable conviction, the
reason why the artist works and lives and has his being--the reward he seeks--the only
reward he really cares about, without which there is nothing. it is to snare the spirits
of mankind in nets of magic, to make his life prevail through his creation, to wreak the
vision of his life, the rude and painful substance of his own experience, into the
congruence of blazing and enchanted images that are themselves the core of life, the
essential pattern whence all other things proceed, the kernel of eternity.
